October 1, 2007 COMET Communications & Signal, Inc introduces a new, cost-effective automatic tag reader system – The Railert ATR. “The Railert ATR system bridges the gap between traditional hand-held data recorders and the higher-priced, full-featured Automatic Equipment Identification (AEI) systems. The simple design and ease of use, not to mention the single, low price, differentiates the Railert ATR from any system on the market today.”
The Railert ATR accurately captures data from radio frequency (RF) tags mounted on a rail car or a locomotive traveling up to 30 mph, at infrequent intervals and in varying weather conditions. Reports generated from the RF tags are instantly delivered via e-mail. The Railert ATR does not report the presence of non-tagged cars and therefore is not meant for use where an AAR S-918 compliant AEI system is required. The single-antenna unit has modular components mounted inside a NEMA 4 box. The NEMA 4 box eliminates the need for shelters and each unit is fully assembled and tested in the factory prior to shipment. When purchasing the unit, installation is included in the price. Traditionally, tag data is collected from locomotives and rail cars through hand-held readers or a hand-written list. The process is time intensive and can involve multiple workers. The more advanced AEI systems can be expensive and offer more features and functions than many businesses need. The Railert ATR has been designed to offer a simplified, lower-cost option.
